My name is Mark Trowell. I’m a firefighter paramedic and I do pet portraits as a side job. My medium is soft pastels on pastel May paper. My portraits are colorful and very detailed. The end result is more realism than loose or abstract but I don’t attempt photorealism. I want the portrait to look like the animal I’m drawing, to be detailed, but I want it to have exaggerated colors and highlights. Art isn’t supposed to look like a photo. The clients that I have sold portraits to have only expressed gratitude.
