Benevolent Sun Dogs - Certified CPDT-KA Dog Trainer - Pompano Beach, FL
It’s all about relationships! I am a Certified Professional Private Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers and am an AKC Canine Good Citizen Instructor/Evaluator. I’ve been training dogs for over twenty years, and the one factor that is crucial in determining whether a dog is a “good” dog is the bond between human and canine. My primary goal in working with clients is to translate and promote a deeper understanding of what each side is trying to communicate. Everyone works together better when we understand what the other is saying, and building a strong relationship between you and your dog is my main focus! There is no need for force, punishment, or aversive tools when you can communicate clearly with your pup. In fact, those methods serve to break down, instead of build up, the trust between you—-and as a force-free, positive reinforcement trainer, I will not use them (and would be happy to explain why not in behavioral and scientific terms). Dogs clearly have rich emotional experiences, and if you disagree with me, then I am not the trainer for you.
I was the Director of Day Training at the area’s largest dog training facility for two and a half years, and was employed as the head dog trainer for two years before that at a corporate pet store. What does that mean? I have extensive experience in puppy issues, basic manners, proper socialization, and enrichment, both mental (puzzle solving) and physical (agility, scentwork, tricks). On average, I worked with ten different dogs per day, 5 days a week, for almost three years. Additionally, for the last six years I have been conducting private, in-home sessions, and I specialize in multiple dog issues and interactions. So I’d be happy to teach you how to teach your dog to be “obedient,” but I’d much rather teach you both how to understand each other better.

How did you hone your craft?
I have always been in love with dogs, and began by sitting and walking neighborhood dogs while in high school. After college, I pursued a career in communications and worked on my training skills by parenting as many as five rescue dogs at once. In 2013, I made the decision to quit my corporate job and follow my dream of becoming a full-time, professional dog trainer. Best decision I’ve ever made!
What tip would you give pet parents for working with animals that you've learned as a pro?
You, as the human, set the tenor of your relationship with your dog. Use lots and lots of positive reinforcement, and try to see the world through your dog’s eyes. So what if he can’t stay in place for more than three seconds? So what if she only sits every other time you ask her? You can work on that. Much more important is that your dog WANTS your approval and enjoys training with you. Your job is to be your dog’s hero, and everything else will fall into place.
What is one thing you want pet parents to know about you? It can be whatev-fur you'd like!
My six dogs (all rescues) are far from perfectly behaved, but I wake up thinking about them, I plan my day with activities that involve them, my meals revolve around them, I go to sleep thinking about them, and, of course, I dream about them!
